Calhoun Baptist Church News January 14, 2014~
Rev. David Van Bebber, Pastor:

Oh what a beautiful morning to go into the house of the Lord. If you wore a hat to services this morning you would not have to remove it because the wind would have already blown it off for you! Although it is so nice that the wind has blown in some warmer air for a little while. We can be thankful for this small blessing and all of the many blessings we have received this past year! Our Pastor David is back at home in Calhoun all of the time and is always willing to talk with you or help you in any way he can.
We are so excited about all of the interesting things we are planning to do in the New Year to worship God here at Calhoun Baptist Church.

The reading of the Word this morning by Brother David was from the Book of
Luke Ch.18: 9-14 NKJV, “The Tax Collector: This parable is unique to the Gospel of Luke. Brother David’s sermon was based upon this parable.

Luke 18:9-14  (NKJV)
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

“Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’
“But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ Which one do you think returned home justified before God? We must remember that we all are the objects of Gods grace and mercy.

Please keep these folks in your prayers.
